Art Gallery of New South Wales, Asian Galleries

Project 1996 – 2003
About this project
The design of the Asian Galleries was conceived as a light, symbolic pavilion distinct from the historic sandstone building. It takes the form of a translucent glass-and-steel ‘lantern’, floating above the older structure.
Internally, the design emphasises flexibility, clarity, with controlled lighting, allowing both delicate and monumental works to be displayed under varying light conditions. Spaces are organised sequentially, with framed views and transitions inspired by Asian architectural traditions.
Overall, the gallery balances modern minimalism with symbolic references to Asian culture, creating a calm, adaptable environment enhancing the presentation of diverse artworks.
