About this project
An impact study and design concept for the Webb Dock Rail Link providing a new rail freight connection between the Port of Melbourne and the north side of the Yarra River.
As part of the assessment, a detailed study of the urban design impacts, including analysis of the alignment and environs, identification of design opportunities and constraints, and the establishment of urban design principles was undertaken, together with design proposals for the twin bascule bridges.
The crossing location is visually and environmentally sensitive, being immediately adjacent to the iconic Bolte Bridge and at the edge of the residential Docklands precinct.
The bridge is conceived with lightness and elegance as a simple clean line drawn from bank to bank. As a thin streamlined bridge, it is a welcome addition to the rugged context of the dock areas. Its silvery appearance complements the Bolte Bridge and the industrial aesthetic of the docks.
