Shanghai Lida University
Project 2021 – 2022
A major addition to a dense university campus in Shanghai creates the Smart Complex, a central focus for the university, grouping together three components of learning and teaching, lecture theatre and sports halls into a large single facility. The main component, an 11-storey tower, accommodates approximately 11,000 students, and contains 150 learning and teaching spaces for up to 55 students each, plus informal learning spaces grouped around a full height atrium. A separate block contains 21 lecture theatres of between 150 to 450 seats each, stacked over 4 levels, supporting up to 4,500 students. The main campus hall provides a large multi-purpose hall accommodating up to 3,500 seats, or multiple basketball courts, whilst basement sports facilities include an Olympic size, 8 lane swimming pool, 8 badminton courts, and 10 table tennis courts.
These three components are linked via a large, green-roof canopy 4 levels above the ground plane, unifying the complex into a singular expression. At the ground plane, the three building components are separated by plaza and laneway spaces protected by the roof canopy to enhance opportunities for student use and activation.
